OUR MEXICO CITY GUIDE

This summer, Vanessa dedicated her capsule collection to Mexico. She started off her trip in Mexico City. In the last five years, the city has experienced a rebirth, as chefs, artists, designers and brands flock to call Mexico city their home. Fascinated by the country’s vibrant culture, Vanessa’s goal was to explore as many landmarks and hidden gems the city has to offer. Vanessa was particularly taken with “Casa Gilardi”, an ode to color and light by Luis Barragán, architect and pioneer of Mexican modernism. However, in addition to the iconic names of the Mexican art repertoire, she discovered a new generation of creatives who are reimagining their country’s heritage. Today, Mexico City has established itself as a cultural capital with its art fairs, galleries and museums, but also with its many restaurants, coffee shops and boutiques. Discover her highlights to spend the day exploring the city :

FUNDACIÓN MARSO

Continue on to this beautiful turn of the century mansion and home to emerging artists. In this non-profit gallery, contemporary art meets social issues such as gender, the environment and indigenism. During her time there, Vanessa particularly admired the skill and creativity of Txt.ure & Perla Valtierra, two design studios bringing Mexican lifestyle to the modern day.

PANADERIA ROSETTA

Start the day early to grab one of the coveted seats at Panaderia Rosetta.The Panaderia is an extension of the renowned restaurant, Rosetta, where chef Elena Reygadas made a name for herself by using seasonal and local ingredients. Taste their Mexican pastries with a European touch, such as vanilla Conchas, cardamom buns, and Guava jam on a slice of home-made bread. Vanessa was inspired by the busy & eclectic atmosphere of this old garage converted into a bakery, and their reinterpretation Mexican classics.

CONTRAMAR

CONTRAMAR

For lunch, head to Contramar, but make sure to plan for a siesta after. Busy and packed with locals, Contramar brings the Mexican coast to the city. It is the ideal place to soak in the atmosphere of Mexico with its pacific-inspired decor. In-the-know tourists come for their delicious tostadas de atún and chef Gabriela Cámara’s creative take on grilled seafood. Nostalgic yet inventive, laid back yet sofisticated this was one of Vanessa’s favorite meals in the city.

LA CASA AZUL/MUSEO FRIDA KAHLO

A trip to Mexico City wouldn’t be complete without visiting Frida Kahlo’s Casa Azul. Mexico’s most famous icon lived there most of her life and many of the rooms are exactly as she left them. Open to the public in 1958 by Kahlo’s husband Diego Rivera. Vanessa was fascinated by Frida Kahlo’s collection of remarkable pre-columbian art, photographs, clothes and books. It feels like you get a glimpse into what inspired her for her paintings.

UTILITARIO MEXICANO

Every design enthusiast’s dream, Utilitario Mexicano is dedicated to selecting both useful and beautiful objects that have been a part of traditional Mexican life. Between artisanal and industrial with kitchenware, stationery and utensils, it is the ideal place to find your souvenirs.

CHIC BY ACCIDENT

A truly unexpected discovery, Chic by Accident is one of the capital's hidden gems. This gallery, opened by Emmanuel Picault, Mexican by adoption since the 2000s, is located in Colonia Roma. In this unique and eclectic atmosphere, twentieth-century Mexican design meets contemporary pieces. This well-kept secret among antique dealers, designers in search of inspiration and architects, made a strong impression on Vanessa.
